blamed for 109 deaths in the u.s. crews and first responders from our area have been sent to some of the worst hit areas while 2.5 million people are still without power. more than half are in new jersey. >>> as the death toll rises and people continue to clean up new york mayor michael bloomberg has decided to cancel tomorrow's new york city marathon. people were outraged this week when bloomberg said the race would be a boost for the economy and inspire the city to move on after the storm. now though the race that brings 40,000 runners through some of the most damaged parts of the city is off. the race would have closed roads and bridges at a time when transportation is already difficult. countless drivers meanwhile have had to sit in long lines just to fill up their gas tanks. new jersey's governor chris christie has ordered gas rationing based on your license plate number. meantime, the obama administration has ordered the purchase of as much as 22 million gallons of fuel and diesel for the areas hardest hit by sandy. many stations are closed because of damage or lack of power

is climbing four days after sandy made landfall. so far, the storm has claimed 74 lives in the u.s. more than five million homes and businesses are without power along the east coast. most of the outages in the new york area. in the meantime, president obama saw the damage on the jersey shore firsthand yesterday. during that tour, the president pledged federal support for the long haul. >> pepco says it's restored power to all of its customers affected by sand dominion hopes to do the same by tonight. about 1,700 of its customers are still in the dark. that number was over 3,000 just a few hours ago. more than 4,000 bge homes and businesses in our area have no electricity. most of them are in anne arundel county. novak is working to restore four a little more than 250 customers. >>> some students will have another day. in anne arundel county four schools are closed. chapel forge early childhood center in prince george's county is also without power, as is lewis town elementary in frederick county, maryland, and all schools in pendleton county, west virginia, are closed because of power outage

in the u.s. utility companies still working to restore power to just under 2 million customers. gas lines are still long, but both new york governor andrew cuomo and new jersey governor chris christie have promised an end to the shortage this week. the gas shortage won't help the rush to get back to work and school. it's the first day of classes in new york since sandy. this morning the subway system is running about 80% of normal service. the new york transit agency says it's several weeks away from full restoration, but it's running emergency bus services today. if you're running north on amtrak, service will be limited between washington, new york, and boston. that's because crews are still repairing the damage caused by sandy. amtrak is telling passengers to make reservations on phone or online to avoid sold out lines at ticket counters. >>> the crane dangling near a luxury high rise has been fastened to the side of the building. so it is now safe to walk under it. those living in buildings had to evacuate last sunday when sandy's winds knocked the crane loose. that included a hotel w
